It’s going to be another great day for the New Albany Farmer’s market. The market is open from 4-7, come down and see what’s in season. We’ll have a variety of berries…(see what we picked today) red raspberries, blueberries and black raspberries to be picked tomorrow. We won’t have a lot so come early to get your pick.
We still have a few cool weather crops available; green onions, peas and radishes. But be assured there are plenty of summer crops available… tomatoes are here along with a few green beans! We also have cabbage, Swiss Chard, new potatoes, beets, zucchini, summer squash, green peppers and cucumbers. Kenny’s has some fresh dug elephant garlic!
We will have some of our farm fresh eggs available, but they will be on a pre order only basis on Wednesdays. It’s just too hot to keep unwanted eggs in the cooler. Just let me know if you need me to bring some for you and I will be glad to accommodate you.
Thanks for supporting us with your purchases at the market and we hope to see you tomorrow,
Val & Kenny
Don’t forget to place your order for our “Baskets of the Week”, as the season progresses they just get better and better, this is a picture of last weeks basket. How beautiful they were!
This Saturday we will have our first “Candy” onions of the season along with plenty of squash…both golden and green zucchini as well as yellow summer squash. We’ll also have fresh peas, radishes, cabbage, Swiss Chard, kale, collard greens, new potatoes, beets, cauliflower and cucumbers. Kenny’s has fresh dug elephant garlic, a few vine ripened red Floyd County tomatoes. They are both sure to sell out fast!
It’s black raspberry time… come early to get some for yourself. We hope to have them around for several of weeks now.
It has been so dry and the temps are rising that we have decided to stop growing lettuce and spinach until the fall. It’s hard to keep them from becoming bitter once the heat sets in; and even harder to keep them cool once we get to the market. The quality just begins to decline and we sure don’t want folks disappointed in their purchases. I will keep you posted when Kenny starts to plant again for fall. I do believe there are some vendors who are at the market that continue growing lettuce throughout the summer.
Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market. Just a reminder that we have been selling out early each week… so come early or pre-order to make sure you get the items you need.
Thanks for supporting us with your purchases at the market,
Val & Kenny
My sister, Stephanie, sent me this recipe to share this summer when our veggies started coming in… well they’re in! It looked so yummy I had to try it when we finally got our first tomatoes. Might I say…DELICIOUS, you have to try it for yourself!
Last week my friend, Valerie, pass along the same recipe… two great minds! Hope you enjoy as much as we did.
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 medium onion ( of course I used our “Candy” ones)
1 tsp. minced garlic
1 medium zucchini
1 medium yellow squash
1 medium new red potato
1 medium tomato
1 tsp. dried thyme
salt & pepper
1 cup shredded Italian cheese
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, finely dice the onion and mince the garlic. Sauté both in a skillet with olive oil until softened (about five minutes).
While the onion and garlic are sautéing, thinly slice the rest of the vegetables.
Spray the inside of an 8×8 square or round baking dish with non-stick spray. Spread the softened onion and garlic in the bottom of the dish. Place the thinly sliced vegetables in the baking dish vertically, in an alternating pattern. Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper, and thyme.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, top with cheese and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown

“Basket of the Week” June 8, 2013
Our baskets were a huge part of last weeks business, I believe they are just going to continue to grow and grow. Each week I can hardly wait to see what Kenny has harvested in order for me make them on Saturday mornings. It’s exciting to see how they come together and how beautiful the basket becomes, they pop with such brilliant colors. Our customers seem to really enjoy receiving them.
More broccoli is in store this weekend for sure, Kenny says it ready to harvest. This is the last weekend for strawberries; they were still looking good today and we picked about 12 gallons but, the quantity may be limited do to the heat and lack of rain. So stop by early to see if we have some still available. Along with broccoli and berries we will have fresh English peas, cabbage, radishes, green onions, new red potatoes, kale, collards, Swiss chard and tons of squash; both green and golden zucchini as well as yellow summer squash. Cauliflower is looking great and Kenny will have more this weekend. We should also have more beets, watermelon radishes and kohlrabi on Saturday.
We will have spinach and a limited amount of lettuce; lettuce loves the cool weather but we have harvested a lot the past few weeks limiting the supply. Kenny is trying to keep a small amount of both growing to keep our wonderful regular customers supplied, but as the temperatures rise the volume decreases as well as the taste. We will also have some fresh cut mint and cilantro.
My patio herbs pots are looking great and I have a couple still available. This weekend will probably be the last time I bring them because we are running out of room with all the veggies being harvested. Stop by this week if you need herbs for your patio or herb gardens.
Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market. Just a reminder that we have been selling out early each week… so come early or pre-order to make sure you get the items you need.

beautiful watermelon radish
Something to think about making with your fresh strawberries… since the strawberry season has been in full swing I have been busy making fresh ice cream and shortcake for the grandkids, pies for Kenny and jam for the market. I decided to freeze some for the winter and thought about making some sorbet for myself.
This winter I tried a new jam recipe, Strawberry Balsamic, and it was absolutely wonderful. I haven’t been able to keep it in stock since making the first batch.
I looked at a few recipes and wasn’t to impressed with them, then I thought what about adding some Balsamic vinegar…the jam tasted so good. This is totally awesome, wouldn’t make it any other way from now on.
1 quart strawberries
4 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon sugar
Combine the sugar and water together and cook in a saucepan on medium until the sugar dissolves. Cool.
Hull and quarter the strawberries
In a bowl combine the strawberries, vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let macerate for 30 minutes.
In a blender puree the macerated strawberries with the sugar syrup.
Return the puree to the bowl and chill through.
Add the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions.

Don’t forget Dad this weekend, there will be plenty of great gift giving ideas available at the New Albany Farmer’s Market! May I make a few suggestions… how about a basket of fresh veggies, some grilling planks and Blackening Spice, or maybe some homemade Strawberry Balsamic Jam? and that’s just from Russell Veggies.
You could pick him up a couple of steaks to throw on the grill from 3D Valley Beef, a loaf or two of fresh bread from Road Side Stand, or some sweet treats from Rookies Cookies. There are homemade goodies from Honey Bar Desserts, some fresh local honey from Shealy Farms, or homemade jams and jellies from Family Spirits Homestead.
The list goes on and on… there is wine, cheese, pasta, oils and vinegars, rustic furniture for an antiquated look from a store online, perennial plants almost anything you can think. This weekend is even chalked full of local artist with their wares. You are sure to find something for Dad here at the market.
Come out and enjoy your morning with us and shop for Dad at the same time.
Use this chart as a guide to local fruit and vegetable availability throughout the growing season. Early crops can vary by up to two weeks depending on spring weather. Late season harvests tend to vary little.
What a beautiful week we are having, it’s been perfect weather for us farmers. Hope each of you are enjoying it as much as we are. We are looking forward to another great farmer’s market this weekend in beautiful Downtown New Albany.
It’s going to be a broccoli weekend for sure, Kenny says it ready for harvesting. Strawberries are still in season and looking great! Stop by early to pick yours up. Along with broccoli and berries we will have cabbage, radishes, green onions, new red potatoes, kale, Swiss chard and tons of squash both zucchini and yellow summer squash, it’s happy, happy, happy with this weather too. Cauliflower is looking great and Kenny may cut a few for the early birds.(only a small amount are big enough to cut).
We will also have some fresh cut mint, cilantro and maybe a few dill flowers.
My herbs are still looking great and we still have several varieties available. This weekend will be the last time I bring the individual pots of herbs, but I will continue to bring the larger patio herb pots. Stop by this week if you need single herbs for your herb gardens.
Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market. Just a reminder that we have been selling out early each week… so come early or pre-order to make sure you get the items you need.
