Anyone want strawberries early this week? Kenny and I have been in the patch all morning picking. They won’t last till Saturday. With rain expected this week we probably won’t have them Saturday morning. They are kinda fickle and don’t do we’ll in the extreme heat and rain.

I will be at the market from 4-7 on Wednesday with Strawberries and a few other items. We have some asparagus, green onions, radishes and a few new heads of ithaca lettuce; that’s about it for us on Wednesday. If you want to pre-order just send me a quick e-mail and I will be sure to set them back for you.

A few other vendors will be there as well… Laura from Road Side Stand will be there with her fresh bread, and word has it there will be “Strawberry Bread” available. Chef Walker will also be at the market cooking up his goodies. Valerie, the honey lady will also be there. There may even be another vendor there with homemade crafts.

Hope to see some of you there. Have a great week!

Once again I am on the road (Kenny said… the last time until at least October) visiting with family. Rest assured Russell Veggies will be open for business bright and early Saturday morning at the New Albany Farmer’s Market. Kenny and Gary along with the rest of our crew will be hard at work taking care of our awesome patrons.

There will be NO pre-orders this week (that’s my department and I’m slacking my duties) but they will continue next week… uninterrupted thru September!

Available this week… Swiss chard, spinach, and kale. A variety of lettuce… Red Sails, Simpson Elite and Grand Rapids. Kenny will have radishes, green onions, asparagus, and rhubarb. If Kenny remembers to cut this week there will also be fresh mint. Strawberries should be ready for the Memorial weekend!

We will have plenty of fresh herbs and garden plants available this weekend. We have basil, dill, parsley, cilantro, oregano, thyme, sage, tarragon and rosemary. Kenny also has a nice variety of heirloom tomatoes, grape and cherry tomato plants.

Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market; we have quail eggs available as well.

Thanks for supporting us with your purchases at the market,

Val & Kenny

Reminder: My friend Valerie Shealy’s local honey will also be available this weekend.

Recycling facts that may interest you…

About one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material!

The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world’s people generate 40% of the world’s waste.

The highest point in Hamilton County, Ohio (near Cincinnati) is “Mount Rumpke.” It is actually a mountain of trash at the Rumpke sanitary landfill towering 1045 ft. above sea level.

Out of every $10 spent buying things, $1 (10%) goes for packaging that is thrown away. Packaging represents about 65% of household trash.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours — or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.

More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.

Because so many of them are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream, according to EPA estimates.

An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!

There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can be recycled.

We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year.

At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold!

If you had a 15-year-old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you’d get about 700 of them. A busy supermarket could use
all of them in under an hour! This means in one year, one supermarket can go through over 6 million paper bags! Imagine how many supermarkets there are just in the United States!!!

The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2,000,000,000 trees per year!

The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years.

Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S.

Americans use 85,000,000 tons of paper a year; about 680 pounds per person.

The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year. Most is packaging and junk mail.

These recycling facts have been compiled from various
sources including the National Recycling Coalition, the Environmental
Protection Agency, and Earth911.org. While I make every effort to provide
accurate information, I make no warranty or guarantee that the facts presented
here are exact. We welcome all polite corrections to our information.

(He’s the young man that worked for us last summer at the farmer’s market) Cody and his team had an awesome year, they successfully won their way to Indiana State Class 1A Champions. I am so proud of them and wanted to share this awesome photo with each of you.

Now lets get back to farmer’s market news… this week we will be taking orders for the greens we have available… baby lettuce, spinach, and kale. Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market. We have quite the variety… brown, green and quail eggs too. Just a reminder that we have been selling out early each week so come early or pre-order to make sure you get the items you need.

My friend Valerie Shealy’s local honey and fresh pecans from their South Carolina farm will be available this weekend.

Thanks for supporting us with your purchases at the market,
