Melons - Melons - Melons

Melons – Melons – Melons

Greeting from the Indiana State Fair…we are having a great time and can’t wait until tomorrow’s “Savor the Flavor” event.

Summer crops are about the same this week… Kenny’s home grown tomatoes, several heirloom varieties, fresh corn and green beans! We’ll also have Swiss chard, red cabbage, new potatoes, kale, zucchini – golden and green, summer squash, eggplants, green peppers, red bell peppers, candy onions, beets, and cucumbers. Kenny’s hot peppers are going to be available…jalapeños, banana peppers and a few hot mix variety. His hot peppers are slow to ripen this year, they like it “hot and dry”, two things we have not had much of lately.

We will have some fruit this weekend; peaches and melons, including our “Canary” melons . They are all delicious!

We have bushels of tomatoes ready to harvest, if anyone needs some for canning please let us know and we will be glad to bring them to the market for you.

Don’t forget to pick up your farm-fresh, free-range eggs at the market. Just a reminder that we have been selling out early each week… so come early or pre-order to make sure you get the items you need.

“Basket of the Week” customers ~ please remember to bring back your baskets and make sure to e-mail me a reminder to ensure your basket order… val@russellveggies.com

National Farmere's Market weekNational Farmers Market Week is scheduled for August 4-10. Farmers markets are the cornerstones of every community and there’s no better time to show this than during National Farmers Market Week.
“Farmers markets are an important public face for agriculture and a critical part of our nation’s food system,” says Vilsack. “They provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also help fill a growing consumer demand for fresh, healthy foods.”
USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service Administrator Anne Alonzo spoke in D.C. on Saturday, saying, “Due to consumer demand for local food we are seeing an increase in the diversity of market offerings and more participation from small businesses and farms. This year we are focusing on the sustainability and maturity of farmers markets — keeping new and old markets thriving and improving.”

According to a news release, local food and direct marketing opportunities, including farmers markets, are one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture.

According to the latest Census of Agriculture, direct sales of food products from farmers to individual consumers rose by nearly 50 percent between 2002 and 2007. Last year, local food sales grew to nearly $7 billion, according to industry estimates.

The proclamation from Secretary Thomas Vilsack…

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. 20250
NATIONAL FARMERS MARKET WEEK August 4-10, 2013
By the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States of America
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS farmers markets are important outlets for agricultural producers nationwide, providing them with increased marketing opportunities; and
WHEREAS thousands of farmers markets across the country offer consumers fresh, affordable, convenient, and healthful products sold directly from the farm; and
WHEREAS farmers markets play a key role in developing local and regional food systems that support the sustainability of family farms, revitalize communities, and provide opportunities for farmers and consumers to interact; and
WHEREAS farmers markets increasingly offer electronic benefits transfer technology for use by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients in redeeming their benefits and also offer opportunities for low-income women, infants, and children and seniors participating in the WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs, respectively, to redeem their benefits;
NOW, THEREFORE, to further awareness of farmers markets and of the many important contributions farmers make to daily life in America, I, Thomas J. Vilsack, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, do hereby proclaim the week of August 4-10, 2013, as National Farmers Market Week. I encourage the people of the United States to celebrate the benefits of farmers markets and the bountiful production of our Nation’s farmers with appropriate observances and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 3rd day of July 2013, the two-hundred thirty-seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America.

Popcorn Series

We have been invited again to participate in “Savor the Flavor – A VIP Taste from Indiana Farms”, an event sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau. This event will take place at the Indiana State Fair in the Farm Bureau building .  “Savor the Flavor” is a unique event made to showcase local Indiana farms and their products along with the culinary talents of young chefs.

  • This VIP event will take place on Thursday, August 15th, 2013
  • Participation in this event allows Russell Veggies  to be 1 of 16 Indiana farms highlighted
  • During the event, we will  have the chance to interact with State Legislators

For the event,  they will be pairing our  product (and also another farm’s protein  product) with a student chef team from culinary schools including Ivy Tech, The Culinary Institute, the Chef’s Academy, and the Purdue HTM program.  Each student chef team will prepare a dish that highlights the products that they are given. Example: Ivy Tech may be given pork and sweet corn; and the team will create a dish that showcases these two ingredients. Teams will be competing for an overall grand champion title; this will be determined by attendees of the event voting for their favorite dish at the end of the night.  Russell Veggies will be providing various types of eggplant as our chosen produce.   These young chefs are people that will someday be running restaurants across Indiana, and making connections with these young people today can lead to larger opportunities in the future.  This also gives the young chefs a chance to interact with us, the local farmers.

Our presence at the “Savor the Flavor” event is huge!  They  are not just looking for products; they are looking for producers and their families who can come to the event and be the face of Indiana farms. This is an invite-only VIP event. They are expecting 350 to 400 people with the main audience being State Legislators. As many of you know, these are the people that make the rules and regulations that we as farmers must live by, so giving them the chance to understand who we are and what we do is a key factor down the road.

We are looking forward to this event and will be telling you all about the results in an upcoming post.  I also hope to get some wonderful recipes using eggplant to pass on to all our eggplant lovers.
